How to Apply Lip Gloss

Are you wondering how to apply lip gloss?

Lip gloss is much easier to apply than lipstick. Because it is so sheer, it is very forgiving so you don’t have to be as precise as you do with lipstick. Here are step by step direction for lip gloss application.

1. Make sure your lips are prepared. Once or twice a week exfoliate the lips. Read my article How to Exfoliate Lips for directions. This is an important step. Dry, flaky skin will ruin the look of the gloss, so make sure your lips are smooth and soft.

2. Apply a very light lip balm to the lip area to moisturize the lip area. Or you can apply a thicker balm and wipe it off before you apply lip gloss. This will give the lips a smoother surface allowing the gloss to glide on.

3. Apply lip liner or lipstick before you apply lip gloss if you want extra color. Lip liner will help add definition to the lip area and it will stay on the lips when the lip gloss wears off. Lipstick will add more color.

4. Choose a shade of lip gloss that will enhance your lips and give you the effect you are going for. Makeup artist Bobbi Brown suggests selecting a tone that is just a few shades darker than your own lips. It should be one you look good in without any makeup.

You can read more of Bobbi’s tips in her book, Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro.

When choosing a lip gloss, also consider time of day. Natural tones work best for day time and brighter colors and glitter glosses are possibilities for evening.

(On a side note, I met Bobbi Brown a few years ago and she really embraces simple techniques and natural beauty.)

5. To apply lip gloss, you can use your finger, brush or the applicator the lip gloss came with. If you are using your fingers and a pot gloss, be sure to wash your hands first to avoid contaminating the product. Apply the gloss to the center of your lower lip and rub your lips together. This will allow the lip gloss to coat the lips evenly without getting messy.

6. Keep your lip gloss with you. You will want to apply lip gloss again as it wears off quickly.

Now you can apply lip gloss like a pro. Have fun with it!
